A folder pair is a collection of data items that tells SyncToy how to
synchronize two folders and optionally their subfolders. For example, one
folder pair might be defined to synchronize a copy of a folder named "My
Pictures" on your desktop computer and a folder named "My Photos" on your
laptop computer. SyncToy saves how you want your folder pairs synced so you can
sync again and again with a single click of a button.
You can create a new folder pair by selecting
the Create New Folder Pair
button on the bottom of the main SyncToy screen.
You will generally need to create one folder pair for each top-level folder you
would like to keep in sync with another one. For example, assume that you have
your pictures in a folder called "My Pictures" and your music files in "My
Music." You wish to copy the files in those folders to two folders on a backup
hard disk. You would create one folder pair for your pictures and another for
your music.
Once you have created some folder pairs, you can select the one work with from
the navigation menu on the left side of the main SyncToy screen, like this:
In addition to the names of each folder pair you have created, the left
navigation menu will also contain an entry for "All Folder Pairs." Selecting
"All Folder Pairs" allows you to preview or run multiple folder pairs at a
time.
In addition to the two folder names, a folder pair also contains the name of
the folder pair, the SyncToy action, and the
SyncToy options
selected.
You do not need to save folder pair information. It happens automatically when
you create a new folder pair or modify an existing one.
Folder pair information is stored in
the SyncToyData folder in your "My Documents" folder.
